Veterans' Medical Research Trust Fund
From time to time, the Veterans’ Health Advisory Panel call for proposals for research on New Zealand Veterans. This research is funded from the interest available through the Veterans' Medical Research Trust Fund.
The Veterans’ Health Advisory Panel (VHAP) is seeking applications from New Zealand-based researchers (individuals or teams) interested in undertaking research projects that improve the mental, physical, and social health outcomes of New Zealand veterans.

Frameworks to guide proposals
The Panel has set Guiding Principles for Investment (Guiding Principles) to attract proposals that:
- recognise a broad, holistic view of health
- have impact in terms of policy and practice outcomes
- are relevant to New Zealand veterans, including Māori
- focus on contemporary veterans
- where appropriate, aim for collaborative partnerships and co-design.

Applicants are encouraged to read Te Arataki mō te Hauora Ngākau mō ngā Mōrehu a Tū me ō rātou Whānau. This policy framework provides information and guidance on improving the wellbeing of military veterans, their families and whānau and highlights potential areas of focus.
The Panel is particularly interested in research that investigates and contributes to the improvement of the health and wellbeing of women veterans.
How to apply for funding
There is a two-stage application process.
- Stage one — Project inquiry
- Stage two — Project proposal (If the Panel agrees your project should be pursued, it will invite you to submit a full project proposal.)
Completing the funding process, from stage one application to contact signing, could take approximately six months.
The deadline for stage one applications is 12pm Friday 28 February 2025.
