Letter from the Prime Minister | 75th Anniversary of the Korean War

25 June 2025 marked the 75th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.

On 25 June 1950, the United Nations Security Council called for combat assistance following North Korea’s move across the 38th Parallel. New Zealand was one of the first countries to answer the call, quickly despatching frigates, Pukaki and Tutira, on 7 July.

This began New Zealand’s seven-year involvement in the Korean War. 45 New Zealand men lost their lives serving in New Zealand forces, 33 of them during the war. Lest we forget.

To mark this occasion, the Prime Minister has released a message to the New Zealand veterans of the Korean War. Clients of Veterans’ Affairs who served in the Korean War will also receive a hard copy of his message by post.
