Rongoā Māori (traditional Māori healing)

We fund rongoā Māori as part of treatment and rehabilitation.

This funding is provided under the provisions of the Veterans’ Support Act 2014.

We consider rongoā to be part of mātauranga Māori and define it as a set of beliefs, practices, and interventions grounded in Māori culture, values, traditions, and world views. The aim is to holistically maximise the health and well-being of the recipient and their whānau.

In testimony to the Waitangi Tribunal’s Military Veterans Kaupapa Inquiry (Wai 2500), there was a desire for rongoā Māori to be funded by Veterans’ Affairs. However, we do fund rongoā Māori, but we acknowledge that we haven't made this widely known.

We expect more applications for rongoā treatment, particularly as ACC has experienced a rapid increase in requests for rongoā Māori. Between June 2020 and May 2024, the number of ACC clients treated by rongoā went from one to about 9,000.

We are working with Māori providers to establish processes for veterans to make applying for rongoā treatment easier.

This work, along with a growing awareness of the availability of rongoā through Veterans’ Affairs, will hopefully mean that more veterans will benefit from access to this tāonga in the future.
