20th anniversary commemorations of Timor-Leste Referendum (Popular Consultation) and INTERFET

In August and September 2019 the Government of Timor-Leste is hosting events to mark the 20th anniversary of the Timor-Leste Referendum and the 20th anniversary of INTERFET.

Timor-Leste Referendum 20th anniversary

The events in August will include cultural and educational activities throughout Timor-Leste, culminating on 30 August with events in Dili and Tasi Tolu.

INTERFET 20th anniversary

The final programme to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the INTERFET mission has not yet been confirmed. However, it will include:

  • 19 September: Various displays at Chega Museum and the Resistance Museum.
  • 20 September: Parade at Palácio do Governo at 9am. This will include the unveiling of an INTERFET plaque, and will be followed by a march to the Centro de Convencoes (Convention Centre).

When the programme is confirmed it will be published on the Government of Timor-Leste's website.

Invitation to attend the commemorations

The Timorese government has invited New Zealand and Australian veterans with service in UNAMET, INTERFET or UNTAET to attend the commemorations.

New Zealand veterans with qualifying operational service are eligible for a Commemorative Travel Contribution. The contribution provides up to $2,500 to support veterans to return to their place of service. More information, including details on how to apply, is available on our website.
